Delphi Archaeological Museum
Delphi Archaeological Museum is renowned as one of the most visited museums in Greece. Founded in 1903, it houses the discoveries made at the Panhellenic sanctuary of Delphi from the Late Helladic period to the early Byzantine era. This two-story museum with fourteen rooms is the home to various status, including Delphi famous Charioteer, architectural elements like the frieze of the Siphnian Treasury, and ex-votos dedicated to the sanctuary of Pythian Apollo, like the Sphinx of Naxos.
Athena Pronaia Temple
Half a mile from the main buildings at Delphi, Athena Pronaia Temple’s sanctuary is located in the southwest corner of Athens’s Acropolis. It’s the smallest among the four temples at the top of the hill. Athena’s main temple was built in the archaic period at the end of the 6th century BC and was destroyed by the Achaemenids in 480 BC after the war with Greece; and then, it was rebuilt. Athena Pronaia Temple is one of the critical surviving temples from the “Masonic Age” and should be introduced as the culmination of Doric architecture’s development.
The Ancient Theater of Delphi
One hobby of the ancient and Roman era was attending the arenas, in times of victory, celebrations or ceremonies, and gladiatorial battles. The Ancient Theater of Delphi is situated within the Pythian Apollo Temple. Delphi Theatre, dating back to the 4th century BC, is made of limestone. Stand on top of the hills and soothes your eyes with a stunning view of the scenery. The theater houses 35 rows seating about 5000 persons, the lower tiers of seats were constructed during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. It houses stone seats, a round-shaped stage, and an orchestra.
Treasury of Athenians
The votive Athenian Treasury, built at the beginning of the 5th century BC by Athenians, houses the city and citizens’ dedications. It’s one of the magnificent structures in Apollo’s sanctuary in Delphi, where all sculptures of Parian marble were built in Doric frieze architecture, storing spectacular treasuries such as the Treasury of the Sifnians and the Boetians. Still, the central treasuries are the Athenians’ Treasury. The walls were inscribed with numerous texts like the hymns to Apollo.
Ancient Stadium of Delphi
Top of the hill right above the Temple of Apollo and the Ancient Theater of Delphi sits the Ancient Stadium of Delphi, surrounding by glorious greenery. Dating back to the 5th century BC, it hosts about 6500 people. Take a walk through the “via sacra” path from the theatre to the stadium. It overlooks the sanctuary of Apollo, providing a stunning view of the entire Delphi.
