Itinerary
The Trift Bridge
is one of the most impressive pedestrian suspension bridges in the Swiss Alps. Stretching 170 meters and suspended 100 meters above the Trift Gorge, it offers breathtaking views of glaciers, rocky cliffs, and alpine lakes. Originally built in 2004 and rebuilt in 2009, the bridge was created to restore access to the Trift Hut after the glacier below receded. Today, it attracts hikers from around the world seeking a mix of adrenaline and natural beauty. Reaching the bridge requires a cable car ride from Meiringen and a scenic alpine hike - a true highlight for adventurous travelers.
Step 2
The Triftbahn is a small cable car operated by Kraftwerke Oberhasli, open to the public since 2005. The 10-minute ride carries up to eight passengers over the Trift River from the valley station at Nessental to the mountain station at Triftalp, climbing approximately 368 meters. Operating seasonally from late June to mid‑October, it provides a scenic and efficient way to access the trailhead leading to the Trift Bridge. Due to limited capacity, booking online in advance is highly recommended.
Step 3
Meiringen is a charming Alpine town in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, nestled in the Haslital valley. Surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, it’s best known as the setting of the famous Reichenbach Falls, where Sherlock Holmes met his fictional end. Meiringen is also the birthplace of the meringue dessert, which local legend claims was invented there.
The town serves as a gateway to a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, climbing, skiing, and canyoning. It offers access to the Triftbahn, leading to the spectacular Trift Bridge, and is well-connected by public transport. With its cozy atmosphere, rich cultural history, and proximity to natural wonders, Meiringen is a hidden gem for both adventure seekers and fans of literary history.
Step 4
Lungern is a picturesque village in the canton of Obwalden, nestled between steep mountain slopes and the turquoise waters of Lake Lungern (Lungerersee). Located along the scenic route between Interlaken and Lucerne, Lungern is a peaceful alpine destination known for its stunning lake views, traditional Swiss charm, and access to nature.
Popular with hikers, cyclists, and photographers, Lungern offers panoramic trails, boat rentals, and tranquil swimming spots in summer. In winter, the nearby slopes and snowshoe trails make it a cozy base for quiet getaways. The Brünig Pass nearby connects Lungern to the Bernese Oberland, making it a convenient stop on any Swiss alpine journey.
