Itinerary
This morning travel south into the heart of the Mekong Delta. En route, visit a unique Cao Dai Temple and pass farmers working on their fields. Arriving at Cai Be pier, board your boat for your first look at Delta life as you pass traditional house boats and a small floating market. Visit a local coconut candy workshop then continue along the narrow waterways, stopping to admire the impressive architecture of a century-old house. Stop for a local lunch and visit a nursery before disembarking and continuing onto Can Tho. After checking in at your hotel, enjoy a late afternoon walking tour including a visit to the bustling local market and the riverside Central Tourist Market. Finish the day with a cocktail by the river. Lunch included.
Rise early this morning and board your boat for a visit to the fascinating floating market at Cai Rang. See local farmers trading their produce on the water as they have done for centuries. Continue on to a fruit orchard where you can sample some of the tropical fruits grown in this region and try some local tea, then enjoy a relaxing walk through the local village of Binh Thuy where you will get a real taste of a village along one of the smaller Mekong canals. Next stop is a visit to the Khmer Temple, Pothisomrom, in the town of O Mon. This is a very impressive Sakianuni Buddhist Temple that also serves as a Buddhist academy. It is unlike any other temple in Vietnam and this is a great opportunity for you to learn more about the long history and relationship between Vietnam and Cambodia. Return to your hotel in time for lunch and enjoy the rest of the afternoon free for further exploration.
This morning board a small sampan for an exploration of the Hau River waterways. Life in this area is still dominated by the Mekong as it has been for centuries. Experience first-hand the bustling waterborne trade and commerce, houses perched on stilts above the water, and floating fish farms. Follow the river into a Cham village and visit the community's mosque, for an insight into the simple lives of these people who formerly ruled much of southern Vietnam. Disembark and return to Saigon to arrive in the late afternoon.
This morning drive deeper into the Mekong Delta with a visit to a local village that specialises in making bamboo baskets, arriving in the riverside town of Chau Doc around lunchtime - enjoying typical rural countryside scenery en route. After lunch, take a walk around the town and visit its bustling market and finish with a visit to Sam Mountain, with its breathtaking views over the rice paddies to the Cambodian border.
