Tour Plan

The Daphni Monastery was founded towards the end of the sixth century A.D. on the site of the Sanctuary of Apollo which had been desecrated by the Goths in 395. The Sanctuary of Apollo was built in the Ionic style using the thinnest and smallest columns. The columns stand on a base with an ornamental scroll at the top. A few of the columns of the temple have been preserved. One of the four Ionic columns of the ancient Sanctuary of Apollo remains at the site, as it was re-used in the Daphni Monastery. The other columns were removed and taken to London by Thomas Bruce, Earl of Elgin (of Elgin Marbles fame). The columns, column bass, and column tops from the Sanctuary of Apollo are currently in the possession of the British Museum.

Exploring the Acropolis was a highlight of my recent trip to Athens, and having a private guide made it all the more enriching. As I wandered through history, I was captivated by the stories behind the Parthenon and the ancient Agora, with each site revealing layers of culture and significance. After taking in the sights, I had the chance to enjoy some local cuisine at a charming taverna where I savored delicious moussaka and fresh tzatziki. One small suggestion would be to allow a bit more time at the food stop to soak in the atmosphere. Overall, this experience was a fantastic blend of iconic landmarks and authentic culinary delights that truly showcased the essence of the city.

Transitions between locations were seamless, with comfortable transportation that made it easy to take in the city’s beauty without feeling rushed. We particularly loved stopping at a hidden gem for lunch, where we enjoyed authentic flavors that were a highlight of our day. One minor suggestion would be to incorporate a bit more time at the last stop; we felt rushed to soak in the atmosphere. Overall, the experience exceeded our expectations and provided a perfect blend of exploration and culinary delights. It’s a fantastic way to get a taste of what the city has to offer, especially for those on a tight schedule.
