Cape of Good Hope | Duration: 1 hour

Historical accounts suggest that Bartolomeu Dias originally named the promontory the “Cape of Storms”. Later, King John II of Portugal renamed it the “Cape of Good Hope”, as its discovery was seen as a positive sign that a sea route to India from Europe could be established. Some sources, however, still attribute the present name to Dias himself.

This mountain has a long and colorful history, largely due to Portuguese explorers searching for a sea route to the East. Cape Point is also home to one of the world’s atmospheric research stations. In the early years of the 20th century, icebergs from Antarctica were occasionally sighted from this iconic point.

Muizenberg was reportedly named after Wynand Willem Muijs, who commanded a small outpost on the shores of Zandvlei in 1743. The Battle of Muizenberg was a small but significant military engagement that began on 7 August 1795 and ended three months later with the first British occupation of the Cape.
