Batticaloa, town, eastern Sri Lanka. Lying on an island off the eastern coast, it is linked to the mainland by causeway, bridge, and ferry and by road and railway connections. Batticaloa is the trading centre for rice and coconuts from nearby plantations and for other agricultural products. It was captured by the Portuguese in 1622, by the Dutch in 1638, and by the British in 1796. The region has been a centre of Tamil separatist activity, and during the 1980s the town was held by Tamil rebels until it was retaken in 1991 by government troops. In December 2004 a large tsunami triggered by an undersea earthquake near Indonesia struck Batticaloa, causing widespread death and destruction. Ruined Portuguese and Dutch forts remain from the colonial period. Pop.

Our family had an incredible time immersing ourselves in the local culture and observing wildlife during the trip. The accommodations were comfortable and conveniently located, making it easy to enjoy both beach relaxation and adventurous explorations; however, we would have appreciated a bit more time at the beach to soak it all in.

Exploring the vibrant wildlife and rich culture during my stay in Kandy was an unforgettable experience, especially the serene moments at Pasikudha Beach where I felt completely immersed in nature. The only minor drawback was the limited time spent in the local villages; I would have loved to delve deeper into their traditions.

Our family had a fantastic time on this three-day adventure, immersing ourselves in both the beautiful coastal scenery and the rich traditions of the local community. One highlight was the wildlife experience, where we spotted fascinating creatures in their natural habitat, leaving us in awe of the region’s biodiversity. The accommodations were comfortable and welcoming, providing a perfect retreat after our daily explorations. We loved visiting nearby villages, where the warmth of the locals truly enhanced our understanding of their culture. If there was one small improvement to suggest, it would be to allow a little more time for relaxation by the beach between excursions. Overall, this trip gave us precious memories that we will cherish for years to come.
