Please Note
Preparation and Logistics
- Currency and Payments: Turkey's currency is the Turkish Lira (₺ / TRY). While major stores and restaurants accept credit cards, it is helpful to carry cash for small purchases at the Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar, and local Bursa markets.
- Hydration: Humidity levels can be high, particularly in the summer months. Remember to always carry a reusable water bottle and take frequent rest breaks.
🕌 Visiting Historical Sites – Etiquette and Respect
- Entering Historic Structures: The mosques and külliyes (complexes) inherited from the Ottoman Empire are still active places of worship.
Dress Code: Clothing that covers shoulders and knees is recommended upon entry. It is advisable to carry a small hand sanitizer for hygiene before and after mosque visits.
Shoes: Shoes must be removed before entering the interior spaces and are typically placed in plastic bags provided by the venue. - Photography: While capturing the general architecture and decorations of historical sites, be mindful not to take unauthorized photos of local people, worshippers, or restricted areas. Flash photography may be prohibited in some locations.
- Silence: Maintaining silence and a respectful demeanor is a sign of cultural courtesy, especially in the courtyards of mosques and during visits to türbes (monumental tombs).
🛍️ Shopping and Local Flavors
- Bazaar Culture: Bargaining is a traditional practice in places like the Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar, and Bursa's historic Koza Han. Do not hesitate to negotiate prices, especially for items like carpets, jewelry, and major handicrafts.
- Bursa Delicacies: Bursa carries the distinct culinary footprint of the Ottoman palace kitchen. İskender Kebab and Candied Chestnuts (Kestane Şekeri) are essential gastronomic heritage items that must be sampled in the city.
- Souvenirs: Traditional Turkish Delight (Lokum), spices, İznik ceramic tiles, and handmade copperware are authentic gifts that reflect the spirit of the region.
