Chateau Purcari Winery tour

Guide tour . By the end of the twelfth century, Moldova’s wine industry had become a major sector of Southeastern Europe’s economy. While the whole region has favorable conditions for viniculture, specific areas are especially fertile for growing the most full-bodied grapes. The village of Purcari and the Agon Zograf Monastery vineyards lay at the heart of this special terroir.

In 1827, Emperor of Russia Nicholas I issued a special decree granting Purcari the status of the first specialized winery in Bessarabia. It was named in honor of one of the founders originating from Germany – Harmizone. Since then, the owners of Purcari have become Moldovan boyars (barons) Dancila and Clot, but also other Germans, Russians and French.

Recognized as a national heritage site and listed in the State Register of Protected Monuments, this church stands out through its beauty, mystery, and exceptional historical value.

What you will experience:

🏛 A rare and enigmatic architectural style
The church is partially built below ground level—a unique feature that allowed its construction during the Ottoman period, when Christian buildings were not permitted to exceed the height of a mounted rider. Officially dated to
1763, the monument may have even earlier origins, possibly from the 16th century. Its preserved elements tell the story of a challenging era for local communities.

🎨 Exceptional frescoes – a true artistic treasure
Inside, the walls are adorned with extraordinary frescoes painted in the style of the
late Hurez School by the artists Stanciul Radu and Voicul. Warm, harmonious tones set against deep blue backgrounds create an unforgettable visual experience. The church hosts some of the most valuable mural paintings in all of Southeastern Europe.

📜 History, legends, and spirituality
Your guide will reveal the debated origins of the church, details about its reconstruction, and the rich symbolism within the frescoes—reflecting both Byzantine influences and local artistic traditions.
