They take their name from the deacon Callisto I, appointed by Pope Zephyrinus to administer the cemetery itself. Having in turn ascended the papal throne, Pope Callistus I enlarged the funerary complex, which soon became the official one of the Church.

Exploring the ancient pathways on e-bikes was a fantastic way to immerse ourselves in history while enjoying the fresh air. We loved gliding along tree-lined routes and soaking in the stunning scenery, especially while venturing into the San Callisto Catacombs, which had a fascinating atmosphere. However, we wished there had been a bit more time for some hands-on exploration at key sites. Our guide was knowledgeable and engaging, providing just the right amount of information without overwhelming us. Overall, it was a memorable adventure that combined exercise with an intriguing glimpse into the past.
