Old Orhei village

The Butuceni Complex is located 60 km north-west of Chisinau and is part of the Old Orhei archaeological site. The village offers a peaceful retreat with all modern comforts, making it a year-round destination, ideal for both summer and winter stays. The complex features houses decorated in traditional Moldovan style, adding to its authentic charm. In the center of the complex, there is a large, modern pond, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere.

During the summer, visitors have the opportunity to participate in the gathering of medicinal herbs and enjoy guided walks around Old Orhei, often referred to as a "museum under the open sky," where they can explore its rich history and stunning landscapes.

The Historical and Cultural Heritage of Old Orhei complex

The museums of Old Orhei help visitors explore and learn about the area’s history and cultural heritage. The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology has two permanent exhibitions with about 186 thematic pieces, including two human skeletons found in archeological excavations. The village of Butuceni offers an Ethnography Museum where visitors can learn about local architecture and cultural heritage. At the heart of this is the traditional Moldovan country house with a roof covered with reeds and on the inside the iconic elements remembered by Moldovans spending their holidays at their grandparents – where the porch, traditional oven, pantry with handwoven carpets, festive clothes and dowry boxes are preserved.

Brănești Winery & “Epoca de Piatră” Cellar Tour – The Old Stone Experience

Step back in time and explore Brănești Winery, home to Moldova’s third-largest underground cellar and the unique “Epoca de Piatră” (Stone Age) complex. Located just 48 km from Chișinău in the Orhei district, this hidden gem spans 75 hectares with 58 km of limestone tunnels carved 60 meters underground.

On this 2-hour Old Stone Experience, you will:

  • Wander through ancient limestone galleries and dimly lit corridors, feeling the atmosphere of the Stone Age.
  • Visit two beautifully designed tasting halls, above ground and underground, reflecting Moldova’s winemaking heritage.
  • Enjoy a guided tasting of red, white, and sparkling wines, plus local specialties, paired with traditional Moldovan dishes.
  • Sample the natural mineral water “Poiana Brănești”, sourced from deep underground.

The cellar’s constant temperature of 12–16°C and high humidity makes it perfect for wine aging. Guests will also hear stories, legends, and history that bring the tunnels and spaces to life.

For the adventurous, Brănești Winery is developing Moldova’s first underground hotel, a medieval-inspired hidden town carved into the limestone. Perfect for wine lovers, history enthusiasts, and cultural explorers, the Old Stone Experience promises a journey you’ll never forget.
