Itinerary
We will visit the battlefield of Marathon where in 490B.C. the 192 Athenians gave their life in a battle that changed the line of history and Thermopylae where Leonidas and his 300 immortals died to save Greece. Then we will overnight at Delphi, the centre of the ancient world.
One of our favorite tours, this one is dedicated to those who fell in the name of freedom. This special tour was designed to accommodate those interested in ancient Greek battles, those who want to discover the major battlefield of the Persian wars, the plane of Marathon. Heading out from Athens to the sacred plain of Marathon driving through Attica Highway and Marathon Avenue. This is the course of the original Marathon Race, as you will see by the signs that count each kilometre. Later we will reach the Tumulus of the Athenians; the site portrays courage, bravery and finally the victory of the Athenians against the Persians in 490 BCE.
Moving on we will also see the Marathon Battlefield, its Archaeological Museum with the tumulus of the 11 Plateans and a prehistoric cemetery that produces proof of the first civilized presence in this location.
Marathon bay is the exact location where Persians camped.
Driving by the present city of Marathon our last stop in this area we will be Marathon Lake, on the slopes of Mt Penteli. It is an artificial lake operating as the main water reservoir for Athens in the past and its dam, a great mechanic construction of the starts of 20th century.
Next, we will be back on board for a drive to Thermopylae. It was here that 10 years after the Battle of Marathon, King Leonidas and his 300 brave Spartans heroically faced the Persian army. In the historical center, an informative 3D movie will be shown.
As if traveling through time you will feel the presence of heroes who stood their ground for their freedom against a foreign conqueror. To conclude you will visit the statue of Leonidas standing exactly opposite Kolonos Hill where the persistent Spartans left their last breath.
Walk around the Thermopylae Battlefield to see the landscape.
After spending sometime in this area of bravery we will drive to the site of Delphi, an ancient Greek sanctuary with a PanHellenic character dedicated to god Apollo. It functioned as an Oracle and was considered ‘the naval’ the center of the word and is today a symbol of Greek cultural unity. The scenic location allows you to have a view of the Greek mountains and two more sites the Gymnasium and the secondary sanctuary of Athena Pronea.
In the site you will visit the Temple of Apollo where Pytheia spoke to the oracles, the theater and the stadium, while in the museum you will admire some incredible findings like the Charioteer.
The second day we will drive to Platea to see another battlefield and then close to Salamis to see the place where the most famous naval battle took place.
On the following day we will drive on the slopes of mountain Parnassus by the city of Leivadia to reach the battlefield of Plataies where the last decisive battle was held between the united ancient Greek cities and the diminished Persian army 479 BCE.
We will visit the place from where Xerxes was watching the navy battle of Salamis, a battle that changed the course of history.
And after that we will drive back to Athens.
