Morning: Explore the Natural Beauty of Benja and Thermal Waters
After breakfast, depart for one of the most stunning natural regions in Albania. Throughout the day, you will explore breathtaking landscapes, with stops along the way to admire the scenery. Your first major stop is the thermal waters of Benja, a serene spot known for its warm, healing waters. The Vjosa River runs through this lush valley, eventually branching into the Langarica River, which flows through a spectacular canyon.
The natural beauty of the Langarica Canyon is awe-inspiring, and the warm thermal waters merge into the Langarica stream, keeping the water temperature between 29°C and 30°C year-round. These thermal baths, known as Bënja Llixha, are famous for their therapeutic qualities. You’ll have around 1 hour to enjoy the waters, with opportunities to relax in the natural pools or take a peaceful walk through the canyon, surrounded by the stunning beauty of the area.
Lunch and Departure to Gjirokastra
After a refreshing visit to the thermal baths, you’ll enjoy a lunch in the area, savoring some of the local cuisine. Following lunch, you will depart for Gjirokastra, a city renowned for its unique architecture and rich history.
Afternoon: Arrive in Gjirokastra
Upon arrival in Gjirokastra, you’ll pass through the Old Town and explore its historic center. The “Neck of the Bazaar” is the heart of the Old Town, once home to artisanal workshops, but now mostly filled with souvenir shops catering to tourists. The area still retains its charm, and you may even encounter a few stone carvers continuing the tradition at the top end of the bazaar.
Before dinner, you’ll have free time to wander through the bazaar and soak in the atmosphere of this UNESCO-listed city.
Sightseeing: Gjirokastra’s Rich History and Architecture
In the late afternoon, your guide will take you on a tour of some of Gjirokastra’s most important historical sites:
Gjirokastra Castle: Explore the impressive fortress that dominates the skyline of the city. The castle offers stunning views of the valley below and holds fascinating exhibitions about the city’s military history.
Skendulaj Fortress: A key historical site, providing insight into the region’s past.
Gjirokastra House: This traditional house has been transformed into a museum showcasing the period of political repression under the communist regime. Learn about the country’s political history and the personal stories of those who lived through it.
Ethnographic Museum: This museum, housed in a 300-year-old house, offers a glimpse into the life and culture of Gjirokastra's people. It’s also the birthplace of Enver Hoxha, the Albanian dictator, and is a must-visit for those interested in the history of Albania.
