Itinerary

Changuu Island: Discover Gentle Giants, Crystal Waters and a Fascinating Past.

Begin your memorable day with a scenic 30-minute boat ride to Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island or Quarantine Island, part of the Zanzibar Archipelago. In 1893, the island was purchased by the former British Prime Minister of Zanzibar, who built a prison complex that was never used for its intended purpose. Instead, it became a quarantine station for yellow fever patients. Today, the ruins serve as a charming guesthouse where visitors can relax and enjoy breathtaking views. Explore the giant tortoise reserve, where you can admire, pet, and feed these majestic, ancient creatures. Interestingly, the tortoises are not native — four Aldabra giant tortoises were gifted by the Governor of Seychelles in 1919.

The tortoises have thrived on Prison Island, breeding freely in a perfect environment. Today, many of these gentle giants welcome visitors, and some of the original settlers are still among them! A nursery for baby tortoises allows you to see young tortoises of various ages — an especially delightful experience for children. Round off this unforgettable day with snorkeling among vibrant coral reefs, where you can admire colorful fish, stunning starfish, and beautiful seashells, or simply relax on the white sandy beach. On your return, enjoy breathtaking views of Stone Town, the bay, and the surrounding archipelago.
