MEŠTROVIĆ GALLERY

Ivan Meštrović Gallery is an [ ] in [ ], [ ] dedicated to the work of the 20th-century sculptor, [ ]. The gallery preserves and presents to the public the most significant works of Meštrović, and is in itself an art monument. The permanent collection includes works of sculpture, drawings, design, furniture and architecture. Holdings include original plaster models by the artist, as well as finished works in [ ], [ ] and wood. The gallery building and grounds were based on original plans by Meštrović himself, and included living and working areas, as well as exhibition spaces.

DIOCLETIAN PALACE

Diocletian's Palace is an ancient palace built for the [ ] [ ] at the end of the third century AD, which today forms about half the old town of [ ]. While it is referred to as a "palace" because of its intended use as the retirement residence of Diocletian, the term can be misleading as the structure is massive and more resembles a large fortress: about half of it was for Diocletian's personal use, and the rest housed the military garrison.

The complex was built on a peninsula six kilometres (3.7 mi) southwest from [ ], the former capital of [ ], one of the [ ] with 60,000 people and the birthplace of Diocletian. The terrain around Salona slopes gently seaward and is typical [ ], consisting of low [ ] ridges running east to west with [ ] in the clefts between them. Today the remains of the palace are part of the historic core of Split, which in 1979 was listed by [ ] as a [ ].
