Itinerary
Step 1
Il‑Maqluba is a dramatic natural sinkhole in the village of Qrendi, formed in 1343 after the ground suddenly collapsed. According to Maltese legend, the site was once a sinful hamlet that was swallowed into the earth as divine punishment — sparing only a righteous woman.
Today, Il-Maqluba is both a geological wonder and a place of folklore, surrounded by protected Mediterranean vegetation and centuries of faith-inspired storytelling, making it one of Malta’s most intriguing countryside landmarks.
Step 2
The heart of Qrendi is a quiet, traditional village core that reflects authentic Maltese life. Centered around its main parish church and small village square, the area is characterised by narrow winding streets, limestone townhouses with wooden balconies, and a peaceful rural atmosphere.
Unlike Malta’s busier towns, Qrendi retains a strong sense of community and tradition, offering visitors a glimpse into everyday village life, local festas, and the timeless charm of the southern Maltese countryside.
Step 3
Palazzo Guarena is an elegant 18th-century noble residence overlooking the village core of Qrendi. Built by a prominent Maltese family, the palazzo reflects the refined architectural style of its time, with symmetrical façades, traditional limestone construction, and understated Baroque influence.
Beyond its stately exterior, Palazzo Guarena stands as a reminder of Qrendi’s historical importance and the social prestige once held by rural Maltese nobility, adding depth and character to the village’s rich cultural landscape.
Step 4
A peaceful coffee stop beneath centuries-old carob trees, right beside one of our charming rural chapels. Prepared and served by your guide, this simple break becomes something truly special — freshly brewed coffee enjoyed in the shade of nature, surrounded by birdsong, history, and the timeless calm of the Maltese countryside.
Step 5
The valleys of Qrendi stretch gently towards Malta’s dramatic southern coastline, carved by time and surrounded by terraced fields and natural Mediterranean vegetation. These peaceful rural paths lead towards some of the island’s most iconic sites, including the breathtaking Blue Grotto and the prehistoric temple complexes of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra.
All are within walking distance, making them ideal to explore at your own pace after experiencing the authentic charm of Qrendi on our tour.
