Itinerary

Preparation & Departure

Locate a boat operator (near the Koggala Air Force Camp or main bridge is common, or book via your hotel). Crucially, agree on the final price, duration, and all stops (especially Bat Island and Cinnamon Island) before stepping into the boat.

Board the Boat

Put on the provided life jacket. Your local guide will give a brief overview of the route and safety instructions. You'll depart the mainland jetty and begin the cruise onto the main expanse of Koggala Lake.

Spotting Wildlife

Glide across the serene water, taking in the panoramic views of the lake fringed by mangroves. Keep an eye out for water monitors, various bird species (kingfishers, eagles), and monkeys along the banks.

Bat Watching Stop

The guide will take the boat near a specific small island (sometimes called Bird Island). Here, you will observe the large colony of Fruit Bats (flying foxes) hanging in the treetops. They are primarily seen roosting during the day.

Arrive at Cinnamon Island

The boat will dock at the small island known as Cinnamon Island (also called Spice Island). This is a working plantation run by a local family.

Cinnamon Demonstration

A local expert will conduct a live, step-by-step demonstration of how true Ceylon cinnamon is harvested, from peeling the outer bark to creating the quill sticks. You may also see nutmeg, pepper, and other spices growing.

Taste & Shop

You are usually offered a complimentary cinnamon tea or drink. You will then have the option to purchase fresh cinnamon quills, powder, or oil directly from the source (purchasing is optional).

Visit Temple Island (Optional)

Depending on the tour you booked, you may stop at a small island (like Kothduwa Temple Island) to visit an ancient Buddhist temple and enjoy a moment of tranquility.

Return to Jetty

Enjoy the last moments of the peaceful cruise, especially if traveling during the late afternoon for golden hour lighting.

Departure

Disembark the boat back at the starting jetty. If satisfied, remember to tip your guide/boatman for their knowledge and service.

Please Note

  • Purchasing products is optional. Be prepared to politely decline if you do not wish to buy, or be ready to negotiate the price for any items you do purchase.
