Operation Bulbasket, Jedburgh Team Hugh, SOE agent Violette Szabo, the French resistance, and the village massacre at Oradour.
Join us on Operation Bulbasket a British Special Forces disruption and intelligence-gathering operation by elements of the 1st Special Air Service in the central part of German-occupied France (6 June/7 August 1944).
Supported by SOE, Jedburgh teams and the French Resistance, the operation was designed to harass German Forces by delaying the movement of its 2nd SS 'Das Reich' Panzer Division from the south-western part of France to the Normandy beaches.
The important roles of the Maqui's, the Jedburgh teams and SOE will be examined, including the story of SOE agent Violette Szabo GC from her landing to capture and the massacre at Oradour-sur-Glane.
We will explore this picturesque part of France in the tyre tracks of the SAS, visiting drop zones, base camps, and various sites where they wreaked havoc behind enemy lines. We will also visit Oradour - sur Glane left untouched for over 80 years and in ruins after German Waffen-SS troops massacred 642 men, women, and children before burning the village to the ground.
