About This Tour

The best times to embark on this exhilarating trek are from March to June and September to November.  Druk Path Trek is one of the most popular treks in Bhutan as it passes through stunning landscapes, high Himalayan ridges and pristine lakes at altitudes ranging from 2400m to 4200m with rich flora and fauna. Trekking in Autumn and Spring offers an opportunity to interact with yak herders around one of the campsites and understand their high altitude semi-nomadic lifestyles. Although graded Moderate to Difficult, Druk Path Trek is fairly an easy hike to undertake as distances between rest camps are shorter. This trek offers stunning views of Mt. Gangkar Puensum, the highest unscaled peak in the world.

Day 2 of the trip is spent acclimatizing by hiking up to the famous iconic landmark in Bhutan, Taktsang Monastery at 3120m and visit some places of interest or shopping if you wish in the afternoon of Day 8 in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan.

Visit the National Museum of Bhutan housed in the 17th-century watchtower/fortress called Ta Dzong. The collection of artefacts at the museum displays a snap-shot of the rich cultural traditions of Bhutan. Visit Paro Rinpung Dzong which literally translates to “Fortress of the heap of jewels”. Built in 1646, this Dzong serves as the office of the governor and head of the monk body of Paro district. From there walk to the beautiful traditional wooden cantilever bridge that runs over the Paro river.

If time permits visit one of the oldest temples in the Kingdom, the 7th-century Kyichu Lhakhang which was built in a single day by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo.

Leisure time to explore Paro town.

Day 2 Hike to the famous Paro Taktsang to Acclimatize (3120m)

After an early breakfast, drive to Ramthangka, the base of the Taktsang monastery. The iconic landmark in Bhutan, Taktsang monastery or popularly known as Tiger’s Nest is built on the face of an 800-meter rock cliff. The round-trip hike takes about 4-5 hours through the pine trees following the ancient route used by pilgrims. Taktsang which literally translates to ‘Tiger’s Nest’, is regarded as one of the most important monasteries in Bhutan. One-way horse riding is available for about USD20 per horse up to the Taktsang Viewpoint Cafeteria which marks halfway but the hike is best enjoyed on foot at your own pace. We recommend starting the hike early to avoid the strong sun.

After lunch at the Cafeteria, we descend back to the base where the driver will be waiting. Rest of the afternoon at leisure around the Paro town.

Health

While Druk Path Trek is moderate for many trekkers, it could be challenging for some. We highly recommend you to train and get physically fit as it passes through altitudes ranging between 2200m to 4100m above sea level and the trails often lead through rough terrains. You get the most out of your trip if you are physically fit!

We recommend that you carry a First Aid kit and hand sanitizers gel/wipes, antibacterial as well as any personal medical requirements. If you are under medication, please bring enough supply to last the whole duration as the same drugs may not be available at the local pharmacies.

Most people can travel to 9,000 feet with little effect but anyone can react to altitude differently and altitude sickness can affect some people irrespective of physical fitness and age. This trip reaches altitude of almost 4100m above sea level so please consult your physician on how to best prepare and what to do in the event you are affected on this trip. Our trained guide will take care of you but it is best if you know your fitness level.
