We spent three days in Khao Sok. Here’s what you can expect.

We’re Sam & Sara, the founders of TripWays. We filmed the whole trip: an elephant bath in the rain, dinner cooked in bamboo, a night in a floating bungalow. Watch it, read it, then choose 1, 2 or 3 days.

Pickup, then four hours north

A van collects you from your hotel in the morning. The drive to Khao Sok takes about four hours, but it’s broken up: fresh orange juice and coffee at a roadside stop, a couple of viewpoints, and, because we went in the rainy season, a small waterfall the locals call Mother-in-law Falls.

Banana Leaf, in the river

At Buathong Elephant Home we met Banana Leaf, a 17-year-old female: playful, gentle and very keen on bananas. We fed her, walked her down to the river and bathed her in the rain while she hosed us down with her trunk. No riding, no chains, no tricks.

Pack: a change of clothes and a towel. You will get soaked.

The monkey temple

Dozens of macaques, grabbing fruit straight from your hand and clambering over the temple steps, babies clinging to their mothers. It’s chaotic and very funny. One scratched Sam when he was too slow with the food; our guide, Lily, cleaned it up on the spot.

Tip: keep food and anything loose in a zipped bag.

03:57

Night one: a room in the jungle

By mid-afternoon we reached our home for the night: wooden bungalows on stilts, set in a lawn under limestone cliffs. It was quiet apart from the jungle, and that’s what woke us up.

A 6 km walk through old rainforest

We set off in the late afternoon while there was still light, walking from station 1 to station 5 through some of Thailand’s oldest rainforest. Early on, spectacled langurs (white rings around their eyes, like glasses) leapt between the branches. Wild elephants live here too, though they’re rarely seen. The cicadas are so loud you’ll have to raise your voice.

06:55

Dinner, cooked in bamboo

Station 5
Tonight’s menu · all cooked in bamboo
  • Sticky ricewrapped in a leaf, steamed inside the bamboo
  • Chicken tom soupvegetables, coconut milk, lemongrass
  • Chicken skewersgrilled straight over the fire
  • Stir-fried vegetablescooked in a bamboo tube
  • Dragon fruit & pineapplecut by the guide, served on bamboo plates

At station 5, just before dusk, our guide cut fresh bamboo into pots, skewers and bowls, and we cooked dinner over the fire. We ate on bamboo plates, under a rainy sky, by firelight.

Then came the walk back in the dark. With one sweep of a flashlight, the guides found spiders on the leaves and tiny frogs we’d have stepped on.

Pack: a flashlight and insect repellent.

Day 2

The lake

Cheow Lan Lake by longtail → a cave → an island hike → a floating bungalow

12:23

Across Cheow Lan Lake by longtail

Day two is about the water. From the pier near Ratchaprapha Dam, a longtail boat takes you across the lake: miles of green water, jungle clinging to limestone. On the way you pass the Three Brothers, three karst towers standing side by side and the most photographed spot on the lake.

13:35

A cave, then an island hike

Halfway through the boat ride we stopped at Pra Kai Petch Cave, carved over millions of years into stalactites, stalagmites and tall pillars. After that came a short hike through rainforest on an island in the middle of the lake, among huge old trees, thick undergrowth and small waterfalls trickling down the rock.

A hot spring, then lunch

We didn’t film this one. After its lake morning, the 2-day trip stops at Rommanee Hot Spring, then has lunch before the drive back.

15:50

Night two: a bungalow on the water

This is the night everyone asks us about. Wooden bungalows sit on rafts, linked together on the lake. The staff welcomed us and showed us around. We swam off the deck in warm water while big fish circled underneath.

Day 3

The river, and home

Bamboo tea → bamboo raft → a temple → back to your hotel

17:22

Bamboo tea, then a bamboo raft

Bamboo rafting on the Khlong Sok River
Film still

On the last morning we stopped at a café above the jungle, where tea is boiled in bamboo kettles and poured into bamboo mugs. Then we boarded rafts made entirely of bamboo for a slow, calm float down the Khlong Sok River, between jungle and limestone peaks. It’s gentle, not white water. In the rainy season the river runs muddy brown.

19:50

A temple on the way home

Sara at the doorway of Wat Mahathat Wachiramongkol
Film still

Our last stop was Wat Mahathat Wachiramongkol, a striking Indian-style temple. Lily explained that locals come here to pray for loved ones who have died, whatever their religion. We joined a ceremony led by monks, then walked through the murals of the Buddha’s life that cover every wall.

Private trips can change. The temple was our guide’s idea; the 3-day trip’s page lists a lake morning and lunch before the drive back. Tell us which you’d prefer.

Then the drive back to your hotel in Phuket or Khao Lak.

Honest answers

What people ask us before they book

How long is the drive from Phuket?

About four hours each way, with coffee and viewpoint stops. On the day trip that means roughly 8 hours in the van across a 12-hour day. The 2- and 3-day trips spread the drive out.

Where exactly do we sleep?

Night 1 (2- and 3-day trips): The Cliff & River Resort, in the jungle. Wooden bungalows with air-conditioning, mosquito nets and a pool.

Night 2 (3-day trip only): Keeree Tara Chiewlarn Resort, a floating bungalow on Cheow Lan Lake. The 2-day trip doesn’t sleep on the lake.

When is the best time to go?

November to April (dry season): sunnier days, easier trails and the busiest months. December to February is the most comfortable, so book ahead.

May to October (green season): the jungle is at its greenest, mist hangs on the cliffs and there are far fewer people. Expect rain most days; very heavy storms can occasionally stop boats on the lake. We went in the green season and loved it.

Will there be bugs?

Yes, it’s a rainforest. The jungle resort’s beds have mosquito nets. Bring repellent, and a flashlight for the night walk.

Is the elephant visit ethical?

No riding, no chains, no tricks, no shows. At Buathong Elephant Home you feed one elephant and bathe her in the river with her keeper. Watch it in our film at 01:55 before you decide.

Is it private, or will we join a group?

The 2- and 3-day trips are private: just your group, a guide and a driver. The day trip joins a small group.

Can we bring kids?

Yes. The 3-day trip takes ages 4 and up, and families with teenagers have loved it. It isn’t suitable during pregnancy.

What’s included?

Hotel pickup and drop-off, your guide, the activities in the story and the meals and nights for your trip length. Tips and personal spending aren’t included.

Each trip’s page lists its exact inclusions: 1 day · 2 days · 3 days.

What if our plans change?

The day trip is fully refundable up to 24 hours before. The 2- and 3-day trips are fully refundable up to 5 days before.

Can we start from Khao Lak instead?

Yes. Pickup works from Phuket or Khao Lak hotels, and you’ll see the right rate at checkout.
