🏁 Tour Itinerary: Wonders of South Madagascar Tour

Day 1 – Arrival at Antananarivo

Upon your arrival at the international airport of Ivato-Antananarivo meet your experienced English tour guide at the customs area. After clearing from immigration and customs, we will transfer you to your hotel in Antananarivo and you can rest and prepare yourself for your amazing 12 days South Madagascar Tour.

Day 2 – Antananarivo – Antsirabe (B, D)

After having breakfast, check out the hotel and then drive to Antsirabe through the mountains, the hills, and the rice fields. On the way, you will see many burial tombs, some simple; others elaborate which play an important role in the local people and their fascination with the afterlife. Arrived in Antsirabe after 03 hours’ drive: the thermal station, “the water city» as it is called; it has become a very important economic city, famous for its fresh products and its mineral water, commonly called “Visy Gasy”. The town is well known as well on the numerous rickshaws and on precious and semi-precious stones. Check-in the hotel and after you will be free on your own to check the places around your hotel.

Day 3 – Antsirabe – Fianarantsoa (B, D)

After having breakfast at the hotel, taking a short city tour of the town and its small manufacturer of corn horns of zebu, semi-precious stones. After, drive to Ambositra the capital of the Malagasy handicrafts. Visit of ARTEMISIA FIELD and the different shops, after visit continuation to Fianarantsoa. Upon arrival, we are taking a city tour in this town which is the capital of the Betsileo tribe.

Day 4 – Fianarantsoa –Ranohira (B, D)

In the morning, after taking breakfast, we depart from Fianarantsoa to the southern part. In Ambalavao, there is an interesting handcrafted paper factory that is worth a visit. It takes about ten minutes to see the different processes at work and there is a small gift shop where you can purchase some of the products. On Wednesdays the possibility to visit the zebu market, very interesting.

We also visit the reserve of the villager of Anja where you can easily see the ring-tailed lemur. In the afternoon, the second part of the trip starts. We pass through Ihosy to the wide grassy plains of Horombe and towards Ranohira. The scenery begins to change as you cross the “Door to the South” mountain and enter the attractive countryside of the Betsileo people where granite outcrops dominate the horizon. Here, the architecture of the village is also starting to change, from the one-story African-style house to two-story buildings in the central highlands where people are more like those in Southeast Asia than they are not ‘Africa.

Day 5 – Ranohira (B, L, D)

Taking breakfast at the hotel and drive to the village of Ranohira to meet your local guide. Today is dedicated to trekking and discovering the park, made up of a ruin-shaped massif dating from the Jurassic, discovery of the most beautiful landscape in Madagascar. You will visit the other side: the natural pool, where you can swim, etc. You might spot bird species like the Madagascar Hoopoe, the Common Newtonia and with luck, the Juvenile Short-eared owl, the Long-tailed Ground-roller and reptiles, and frogs.

Day 6 – Ranohira – Tulear – Ifaty (B, D)

Breakfast at the hotel and then head into the Tulear through different villages of sapphire miners and the southern savannah. Stop along the way to visit Zombitse National Park. You will be able to see baobabs, well-painted tombs as well as typical villages of the southern tribes. Arrive in Tulear then continue to Ifaty to check-in at your hotel and you will be free after to rest or visit places around your hotel.

Day 7 – Ifaty –Renala Resere (B, D)

Breakfast at the hotel, then in the morning take a visit to the Reniala Reserve. Located at the edge of the northern and southern dry forest and the thorny bush, the Reniala Reserve, or “mother of the forest reserve” is a habitat of remarkable diversity. You will take a notion of medicinal plants and don’t miss taking a photo in the avenue of baobabs, the cave of baobabs, and tired baobabs. You can’t see it anywhere. The visit will end in the village of the tortoise where you will have to be spotted the various endemic tortoises of Madagascar. You will be free in the afternoon but there will be the possibility to take advantage of the hotel’s beach or beach activity.

Day 8 – Ifaty – Ranohira – Ambalavao (B, D)

After having breakfast, depart in the morning to cross Ambalavao. Arrive in Ambalavao after having spotted the ring-tailed lemur in the Anja reserve with its cultural stories. Anja is a natural and cultural reserve managed by the local population. You will climb the mountain until you breathe at the top and admire the clean air. It is famous for the ring-tailed lemur and it is easy to see them in groups of four to twelve males and females. The scenery begins to change as you pass through the ‘Gate to the Mountain and the attractive countryside of the Betsileo people where granite outcrops dominate the horizon. Here, the architecture of the village is also starting to change.

Day 9 – Ambalavao – Ranomafana (B, D)

Breakfast at the hotel and drive to Ranomafana national park. On the way, there will be the possibility to visit the FIELD OF ARTEMISIA. Upon arrival, check-in and take some rest. You can go for a night walk or enjoy spending time at the swimming pool.

Day 10 – Ranomafana (B, D)

Breakfast at the hotel and drive to Ranomafana national park`s parking to meet your local guide. Walk towards the rainforest. Ranomafana`s protected mountain rainforest covers an area of 41,600ha at altitudes between 600m and 1,400m (1,970 -4,600ft.) The area is dominated by the Namorona River which, fed by many streams, plunges from the eastern escarpment close to the park entrance. The steep slopes are covered with a mixture of primary and secondary forest, much of the secondary growth is dominated by dense stands of introduced Chinese guava (Psidium Cattleyanum) and clumps of giant bamboo.
You might be spotting some species of lemurs (golden bamboo lemur, greater bamboo lemur, Milne-Edwards` sifaka, red-bellied lemur…) birds (brown mesite, Pollen`s vanga, blue vanga, velvet asity, Grey-crowned greenbul …), reptiles (Parson`s chameleon, Peacock day gecko, numerous frogs, Mantella frogs, …).
After +/-6 hours of the visit, you get back to your hotel. In the afternoon, enjoy the natural hot swimming pool before taking another place to walk the night. You might be on the chance of aye-aye. Perhaps more than any other mammal, the aye-aye epitomizes all that is bizarre and compelling about Madagascar`s wildlife. It is a seriously weird animal that scientists originally classified as a squirrel. So unique is this species that it is not only the sole living member of its genus but also of its family (Daubentoniidae).

Day 11 – Ranomafana – Antsirabe (B, D)

Breakfast at the hotel then drives eastward to Antsirabe through the typical landscape of the highland (rice fields, typical villages of the Merina tribe, rocky hills….). Arrive in Antsirabe in the late afternoon, install in your room.

Day 12 – Antsirabe – Departure from Antananarivo (B, L)

After breakfast, we head into the capital, Antananarivo. (Free lunch during the road). Upon arrival in the Capital, check in to AU BOIS VERT for today before heading into the airport. After taking some rest, we transfer to the airport to depart to your home.
