Things To Do in Fes

Al Quaraouiyine Mosque
Fatima al-Fihri constructed Al Quaraouiyine in 859 B.C. It’s known as one of the world’s oldest universities, which is now used as a mosque only for Muslims. However, non-Muslims can use the public library. From the rooftops of restaurants in the vicinity, you’ll get a glimpse of the splendid courtyard.

Dar Batha
Dar Batha, previously a palace located in the city, is now served as a museum showcasing an incredible collection of ancient artifacts, traditional Moroccan tiles, carpets, embroidery, delicate wood carvings, and a 14th-century ceramics collection. It houses a fantastic Andalusian-style garden with different types of plants, sounds and aromas, and a water fountain.

Chouara Tannery
The world’s oldest tannery and the most iconic spot in Fes is a massive tannery encircled by shops and houses where men make leather. Remember to wear a mask or take a scarf to cover your nose for the dyeing process’s irritating smell. Buy as many leather souvenirs as you want.

Medersa Bou Inania
The Muslim intellectuals’ former theological college is located right at the entry of the old Medina. Sultan Bou Inan constructed the building in the 14th century, where you’ll find carved plaster, cedar mashrabiyas, mosaics, and large doors, with a fountain. The splendid Medersa Bou Inania houses rooms on two floors used for classes.

Merenid Tombs
Merenid Tombs is the home to the skeletal remains of sultans and royal members of the Merenid dynasty. Most engravings and decorations have been faded over the years, but the authentic architecture is still shining. Don’t miss out on the sunset view over the 1,200-year-old medina climbing up the hill.

Al-Attarine Madrasa
The Al-Attarine Madrasa is an ancient landmark situated around the Al-Quaraouiyine Mosque and the Al-Attarine Souk. In this market, you’ll find dried nuts, fruit, and various local spices. The madrasa, constructed within 1323-1325, was named after the market and designed with the same decoration. Soothe your eyes with cedar wood, carved plaster, magnificent green and blue zellij tile work, a fountain, and classrooms.

Mellah
In the 14th century, Mellah was a Jewish quarter and a refuge for the Jewish community. Mellah is rich in culture, history, and Jewish-style architecture.

Mount Zalagh
Mount Zalagh, located north of Fez El-Bali, is a picturesque landscape filled with olive groves, soaring birds, and grazing goats. It offers a great view of the whole old medina and the surrounding area.
